The purpose of the Na Liko Noelo Program is to identify, mentor and provide research training, fellowships and grant opportunities to Native Hawaiians interested in cancer research.

Na Liko refers to "plant buds" and Noelo refers to research. The
Hawaiian language is utilized as a way to connect to and gather inspiration from the
Hawaiian culture.

We offer three categories of participation:

  • Principal Investigator-career: This individual expresses serious interest in pursuing health research as an essential part of his/her professional career. A major goal of this researcher is to be the Principal Investigator of an R01 or similar grant.
  • Principal Investigator-occasional: This health professional/student will act as Principal Investigator on occasional and/or short-term research projects as time permits. Students completing research requirements would fall into this category as would others engaged in non-research, full time careers.
  • Co-Investigator: This health professional possesses specific skills critical to a principal investigator to complement a research team (e.g., clinical, biostatistical expertise) on a part time basis.
  • Research Associate: This individual will assist in cancer research projects due to personal or professional interest. This group includes Native Hawaiian community members and health professionals who play an active role in addressing Native Hawaiian cancer issues.
